St. Joseph’s Family Center announced Monday that Syngenta Flowers had donated $10,000 to the center. The donation came after the city required the company to clear a homeless encampment off its land in western Gilroy.
“We know firsthand there are people in need as we have met those who were encamped on Syngenta Flowers property,” said Joel Goldsmith, of Syngenta Flowers in Gilroy. “We want them to know there is help available through organizations like St. Joseph’s.”
St. Joseph’s is a nearly 30-year-old collaborative of individuals, businesses and churches that offers food, shelter and employment services for South County residents as well as programs to foster self-sufficiency.
Syngenta’s donations will greatly enhance St. Joseph’s ability to serve the homeless in the Gilroy community, and they are greatly appreciated, said David Cox, executive director of St. Joseph’s Family Center.
“Donations such as this allow us to continue to provide a much-needed safety net for families and individuals in our community,” Cox said.
In the past six months, more than 4,000 people have benefited from St. Joseph’s services, receiving food, shelter, clothing and employment services, according to Cox.
In light of current economic challenges, Goldsmith encouraged others to donate to St. Joseph’s as well.
“St. Joseph’s Family Center is a vital part of the Gilroy community, and we are proud to provide this support, especially in these difficult economic times,” he said.
