Richard “Dick” E. Porteur, 89, passed away July 5, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family. Dick was born November 20, 1920, in Clovis, CA and grew up in Hollister, CA. He was the 1939 California State Boxing Champion, the 1939 Diamond Belt Champion, the 1940 Golden Gloves Boxing Champion, the 1941 & 1942 Pacific Assn AAU Champion fighting for the San Francisco Olympic Club. He had over 70 amateur & several pro fights. He served in the US Army in Okinawa during WWII. He worked for the Civil Service at Fort Ord and Presidio of Monterey, retiring after 31 years. A longtime resident of Hollister and Salinas, he retired to Carson City, NV in 1994. Dick was an accomplished watercolor artist; he loved to hunt, fish, horseback ride, gold prospect, garden, read and travel. Instilled by his mother’s family tradition of reciting poetry, Dick continued the tradition, usually with a knack for finding the perfect line from a poem to fit any situation. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, the Carson City Rife & Pistol Club and California Rifle & Pistol Club. He was the Monterey County High Power Rifle Club Champion several times. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joy Hodges Porteur, children Kraig Porteur, Michele McCandlish and Lance Porteur, grandchildren Staci Magdaleno, Garth Porteur and Aaren Porteur, great-grandchildren Illiana Porteur, Ashlyn Madelyn and Cole Magdaleno, brother Jess O’Farrell and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Marion Porteur, his mother and step-father Harriett and Manual Silva, great-grandson Elias Christopher Porteur, brother David Porteur, sister Annabell Lee Appling and dear friend, Ken Ching. Services will be held Friday, July 23, 2010, at 11:00 A.M.at Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery, Fernley, NV with a reception following at their home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans 5460 Reno Corporate Dr, Reno, NV 89511 or Saint Mary’s Hospice, 429 Elm St., Reno NV 89503.
