The Mustangs volleyball team ousted Wilcox in four games in a
non-league match Tuesday in Santa Clara while the GHS baseball team
picked up its first win at the OC Nissan Select Invitational,
blanking Yorba Linda 6-0.
SANTA CLARA – The Gilroy High boys volleyball team took care of non-league opponent Wilcox in four games (25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 25-14) on Tuesday night in Santa Clara.
The win moves the Mustangs to 13-8 overall. Gilroy currently sits alone in first place in the Tri-County Athletic League with an 8-0 record, one game ahead of second place Monterey and two games better than San Benito.
Senior Albert Chavez had a monster match, posting a season-high 32 kills, one better than his 31 in a loss to Mt. Madonna two weeks ago.
Nico Sandoval produced 12 kills and 10 digs while Dietrich Baumgartner was a menace on the front line with 11 blocks and eight kills. JJ Lam led the way with a team-high 17 digs from his libero position, and Gavin Menges had a season-high 55 assists.
The Mustangs begin the second half of TCAL play Thursday against San Benito in Hollister. GHS swept the Balers in the two teams’ first encounter March 2 to open the league calendar.
Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
BASEBALL
ANAHEIM – Taylor Chris tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Gilroy High baseball team to a 6-0 victory over Yorba Linda at the OC Nissan Select Invitational on Tuesday in Anaheim.
With the win (their first in of the week-long tournament, 1-2), the Mustangs are still alive in the consolation championship bracket and will play Corona High today. Michael Hartman will get the nod on the mound, manager Johnny Ramirez said.
Sophomore catcher Jordan Dexter, who has been behind the plate every inning this season (15 games) collected two more hits on Tuesday, giving him seven in the three games the Mustangs have played in the tournament. Jordan Holler ripped off five more stolen bases, padding his stats to 13 stolen bases over the three games.
