â– No. My understanding is that most of the in-service days are a waste of valuable teaching time conducted only because they have become routine and expected. Furthermore, that the training is typically provided by district officials perpetuating the status quo rather than outside experts who would bring new and better ideas to GUSD teachers and administration.
â– Teacher in-service days can be used very effectively when it is program related and something where new and veteran teachers need proficiency training and not just grade-level planning. At this point, when there is so much concern about teacher/student contact time, let the teachers teach, principals take responsibility for their school site and the performance of their teachers, cut back on the central office hierarchy and put them back in the schools. If a new teacher needs training, send them for training and use a substitute or combine classes to accommodate.
â– No, aren’t they already trained?
â– Like any organization, the effectiveness of the event depends on the determined creativity of the planning team.
â– Unless there are specific, tangible, measurable criteria that objectively proves in-service days benefit STUDENTS, then forget it.
