Last-minute free throws lifted Christopher to a 66-64 win over Monterey Wednesday at home.Â
The Cougars took a narrow 38-35 lead into halftime and trailed by a point after being outscored 16-12 in the third quarter.Â
Chad Hartman led the Cougars with 26 points—including six 3-point baskets. He added eight rebounds, five assists and a steal.
Xander Bowers had a double-double of 15 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. He also had three assists and two steals.
Dillon Day posted 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.Â
Christopher (13-5 overall, 4-2 in league) will host Monte Vista Christian at 7 p.m. tonight.Â
Gilroy drops heartbreaker to Watsonville
Michael Kropff scored a stellar 28 points for Gilroy Wednesday, but his team was edged by a single point. The Mustangs lost 57-56 to the Wildcatz in Watsonville.Â
Kropff was 2 for 4 in 3-pointers and 6 for 8 from the line. Kevin Azcueta and Pedro Tapia both added eight points, Justin Soseman chipped in with six.Â
The 3-15 Mustangs will take on the Condors at 7 p.m. tonight at North Monterey County High School.
BOYS SOCCER
Mustangs blank San Benito
Gilroy snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-0 shutout over San Benito Thursday in Hollister.Â
Sean Kaufman broke a scoreless tie in the second half, scoring off an assist from Jaime Silva to put Gilroy ahead 1-0. Fernando Lares secured the win with his seventh goal of the year on an unassisted goal.Â
Gilroy (5-8 overall, 3-5 in league) will host the undefeated Watsonville Wildcatz at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.Â
Cougars tie with Grizzlies
Christopher traveled to Pajaro Valley Thursday, but neither team could edge the other and had to settle for a 1-1 tie.Â
Both teams scored in the first half. The Grizzlies’ goal came from Abraham Cruz. Stats for Christopher were not yet available.Â
The 4-5-2 Cougars—3-2-2 in league—will host North Salinas at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.Â
