Red Phone

In the last year, my neighbor has moved into his front and side yard on the dirt, six or seven cars that one day maybe restored. I live in a R1 Residential Zone. Every time I go out into my backyard, I am looking at a salvage yard. I think that there might be an ordinance on this one, but I know it would be a very low concern for the ordinance people because they are busy with a lot of stuff. Anyway, I have not given them a call because I think that nothing at all will happen. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

 Red Phone:

Good caller, Red Phone has good news for you and for all other residents of Gilroy who suffer the same ‘neighbor’s junk yard’ blight. This situation will not continue under Red Phone’s watchful eye! Red Phone contacted the Gilroy Code Enforcement Officer, Scott Barron, and found out the following.

Basically, we got laws! According to Barron, the following City Codes might apply to your situation:

  • Municipal Code Sec. 15.113 – Storage of abandoned, wrecked, dismantled or inoperative vehicles on private property prohibited.

  • 5C.8 – Improper parking, storing or maintaining in residential zones.

  • 5C.9 – Parking restricted to paved areas.

Barron said, “Community Service Officer Maria Cabatingan generally handles the enforcement of inoperative vehicles in the front yard area of residential properties in the City. I would start by referring the caller to her at (408) 846-0320.”
So, good caller, things can only happen if you call Officer Cabatingan. Good luck and, may your backyard view improve significantly!
