GILROY – While investigating a theft of baseball cards from a 7-Eleven market, city police turned up a salable amount of methamphetamine Wednesday morning and arrested two Gilroy men.

According to police, 22-year-old John Anthony Hernandez and 43-year-old Lennie Carrillo stole a case of unopened baseball cards, worth about $120, from the 7-Eleven at 691 First St. A store clerk made note of their vehicle’s license plate number, which Gilroy police traced to a house at 7335 Wren Ave.

There they arrested Hernandez at 9:57 a.m. Wednesday after a short foot pursuit. In his vehicle police said they found 20 grams (nearly an ounce) of methamphetamine and a small amount of marijuana.

In addition to drug charges he will likely face – the amount of methamphetamine could qualify him for a possession-for-sale charge – police saw him driving with a suspended license, and he was wanted on an warrant related to a charge of alcohol possession by someone under 21, police said.

Hernandez did not have the baseball cards, but police found them – along with a small amount of methamphetamine – with Carrillo, whom they arrested at 12:19 p.m. that same day at a Monterey Street motel. In addition to drug possession, Carrillo could face a second felony charge for petty theft with a prior theft conviction.

Police released Hernandez to appear in court at a later date but booked Carrillo into county jail, where he remained Thursday.

Carrillo lives at 7050 Rosanna St., and Hernandez lives on Ferguson Road, according to police records.
