Gilroy – School Board President Jaime Rosso was still headed for a second term Friday after more than half the county’s uncounted ballots were tallied, but there’s still another 90,000 votes to go.

Rosso lengthened his lead over fellow incumbent John Gurich for a still-contested seat on the Gilroy Unified School District Board of Trustees.

He had 16.04 percent of the vote to Gurich’s 15.85 percent Friday night, or a difference of 52 votes, up from the 38-vote difference Wednesday.

Retired principal Pat Midtgaard and parent Rhoda Bress still firmly held onto their seats with 24.5 percent and 19.1 percent of the vote, respectively.

The third incumbent, Bob Kraemer, was behind Gurich by 419 votes out of 27,704 counted. Robert Heisey was 1,191 votes behind Kraemer.

The Registrar of Voters Office had 207,000 votes to count county-wide after polls closed and all precincts reported Tuesday night. By Friday, there were roughly 90,000 left. It remains unclear how many, if any, of those uncounted absentee, paper and provisional ballots would affect the GUSD race. Earlier this week, Registrar Spokeswoman Elma Rosas said it could take several weeks to get the remaining ballots counted.
