GILROY – School board trustees unanimously approved the sale of 4.4 acres of land to the City of Gilroy for a new neighborhood park. The excess property, adjacent to Antonio Del Buono Elementary School, has been unused by Gilroy Unified School District since the school opened in 2000.

The city will pay $602,000 for the property next to the school campus, located at 9300 Wren Ave. Just before approving the property sale, trustees declared a total 6.5 acres at Del Buono as surplus land, a step required by the state. GUSD will retain a 2.1-acre portion of the property that contains access roads to the school.

GUSD has discussed the property with the city since about 1999, so the sale price is based on a pre-existing agreement, said Steve Brinkman, assistant superintendent of administrative services.

In other business, trustees:

– Further discussed meeting procedures in place to keep meetings short and to the point. School Board President Jaime Rosso reviewed the policy and requested a re-affirmation of the three-minute time limit for public speakers and a 10 p.m. adjournment unless a majority of trustees vote to continue.

Trustees noted that members of the public may speak for three minutes each, with no more than 30 minutes spent on each topic. When large numbers of people wish to speak, Trustee Jim Rogers said, one option is to take a census of those remaining to identify which points of view they agree with.

A timer will now be used to monitor speakers. A green light will shine until 30 seconds are left, at which time a yellow light will turn on. At three minutes, a red light will let the speaker know he or she has reached the time limit. The timer will also be used for staff presentations, which are allowed a certain number of minutes listed on the agenda.

“It’s going to make us plan a little better,” Superintendent Edwin Diaz said.

– Ratified a tentative agreement with the district’s classified employees, including secretaries, food service workers and bus drivers for the 2002-03 school year. GUSD reached an agreement with the California School Employees Association, Chapter 69, to maintain the salary schedule approved for 2001-02. The parties reached agreement on Nov. 6 and classified staff approved it on Dec. 15.
