Gilroy – The Gilroy Dispatch welcomed new Deputy Lifestyles Editor, Damon Poeter, this week. The position is a new addition to the lifestyles department which now publishes a daily section in the Gilroy Dispatch, Hollister Free Lance and Morgan Hill Times.

Having returned to California after eight years in Thailand, Poeter is eager to get to know the local community and bring out the stories that deserve to be told.

“I have a commitment to making this a more valuable paper for readers. If readers are getting a bigger section every day, they’ll come to rely on it much more,” he said. He is committed to putting out a section that reflects the interests and needs of readers.

He will be responsible for laying out pages, writing stories and helping to manage the freelance writers.

Poeter, 33, grew up in San Francisco and graduated from UCLA with a degree in theater. A two month vacation turned into a long-term stay in Thailand when he was hired to work for the Nation newspaper, an English language daily based in Bangkok. He worked as a copy editor, head sports editor and deadline editor.

He also worked for a gem and jewelry trade publication, InStore, which is aimed at 40,000 United States jewelry retailers. While in that position he traveled to Berma, Australia, Switzerland and Ireland covering industry related stories. His also enjoyed writing about related issues including human rights.

He recently moved to Gilroy with his wife Jirayu and their two sons Sandy, 5, and Ren, 3.
