Last day to register to vote is Monday
San Jose – Monday is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 8 special election. To register in Santa Clara County, a voter must be, at least, 18 years old on election day, be a U.S. citizen, be a Santa Clara County resident and not be in prison or on parole for a felony.
Voter registration forms can be found at city halls, fire stations, post offices, public libraries and most county government offices. Registration forms are also available online at www.sccvote.org and at the Registrar of Voters’ Office, 1555 Berger Drive, Building 2, San Jose.
Voters need to re-register only if they have changed their name or address, or would like to change their political party affiliation.

Wal-Mart awards grants to nonprofits
Gilroy – The Wal-Mart Community Advisory Board is inviting community groups to apply for one of its 2005 community grants. The grants are awarded to local nonprofit organizations that benefit Gilroy residents in the areas of youth enrichment, community improvement, or education programs. Grants range from $500 to $2,000.
Applications are available at the new Wal-Mart Supercenter, 7150 Camino Arroyo Circle, or at Articulate Solutions, 65 Fifth St, Suite 100, in Gilroy. They can also be requested via e-mail to k.******@*****on.net.
All applications are due at Wal-Mart by 5pm Oct. 31.
City offers disaster workshops
Gilroy – Gilroy will be offering two workshops on disaster preparedness from 6 to 8pm, Nov. 9; and from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, Nov. 16.
Participants will learn about the importance of being prepared before a disaster strikes.
Discussion will include information on which disasters are most likely to affect the area and what they can do to deal with problems after a disaster occurs.
The program will include the viewing of a new video entitled, “Condition Red: Prepare for Disaster.” The video educates families and individuals who have no emergency preparedness plan.
The workshops will also teach the public how to put together a 72-hour emergency preparedness kit.

Gilroy 9-year-old fails to reach final four
Gilroy – Zach McMahel, Gilroy’s very own 9-year-old guitar player, did not make it to the final four in KFOX’s annual “Last Band Standing.”
Zach found out that he had lost the competition Tuesday night when his family returned from a trip to Disneyland.
“So I think that softened the news a bit,” said his mother Tina McMahel.
McMahel said he dealt with the loss maturely but was obviously disappointed.
“He really wanted to meet Greg Kihn,” said McMahel.
McMahel said it was a difficult competition because the other young musicians in the 18 and younger competition are older and were in bands.
Zach is home schooled and most of the children his age aren’t ready to commit to playing in a band, said McMahel.
Laurie Roberts, a KFOX DJ, said Zach did a great job and that the competition was tough since some of the musicians asked fellow students at their high schools to cast votes.
“It just wasn’t his time,” she said.
Roberts said Zach is still invited to visit the station and record some music.
The top four finalists are performing live on the Greg Kihn morning show this week. The winning bands go onto the final performance rounds Oct. 25 through Oct. 27.
Soar with Young Eagles Saturday
San Martin – Kids interested in aviation can take a free ride in an airplane at the South County Airport in San Martin.
The local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association is offering the rides as part of Young Eagles day.
Young Eagles pilots will offer rides to kids between the ages of 8 and 17 from 10am to 2pm, Saturday. Kids who want to fly in a plane must be accompanied by a parent.
The Young Eagles program has provided more than one million free rides since it was founded in 1992.
