Bilingual story time

GILROY – Storyteller Bobbi Salinas will read at Barnes and Noble’s first bilingual story time on Saturday at 2 p.m. Salinas will read from her book “The Three Pigs/Los Tres Cerdos – Nacho, Tito y Miguel. Pinnacles programs

PINNACLES NATIONAL MONUMENT – Pinnacles National Monument is offering a series of nature hikes this summer, every Saturday and Sunday through Aug. 29.

For East District hikes, which begin at 10 a.m., meet at the Bear Gulch Visitor Center, and for West district hikes, which begin at 2 p.m. meet at the Chaparral Ranger Station.

Also in the East District, talks are offered every Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. through Aug. 29. Meet for talks at the Bear Gulch Visitor Center.

All programs are free.

Garlic cooking demo

GILROY – The Godfather of Garlic, Val Filice, will give an informative talk and demonstration on cooking with garlic at Barnes & Noble on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Filice, a master chef of the Gilroy Garlic Festival, will share some of his favorite recipes from the newly revised “The Garlic Lover’s Cookbook.” Barnes & Noble is located at 6825 Camino Arroyo.

Book Group

GILROY – Join the Barnes & Noble book group on Thursday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. as it discusses Paul Coelho’s book “The Alchemist: A Fable about Following Your Dream.”

The story follows an Andalusian shepherd boy, who, with the help of several strangers, learns to listen to his heart and follow his dreams. Barnes & Noble is located at 6825 Camino Arroyo.

What will kids read?

Connect for Kids’ will play host to an online chat with the author of “Be More Chill” and the creator of Reading Rainbow to discuss what books teens and ‘tweens like to read.

Research shows this age group is falling behind in reading skills, and a recent survey by the U.S. Census Bureau indicates a dramatic decrease in literary reading over the past 20 years by America’s youngest citizens.

In the latest edition of Connect for Kids’ “TalkTime Live!” series, parents and students will receive insights into what it takes to coax tweens and teens to pick up a book and read this summer.
