The Gilroy wrestling team won the California Coast Classic with a team total of 258.52 points—52.47 points better than Clovis, which took second. Five Mustangs took home first place—Nick Aguilar (106), Gavin Melendez (120), Alex Felix (132), Matt Penyacse

There was no questioning which team would take home the top prize at the California Coast Wrestling Classic.
Gilroy finished 52.47 points higher than Clovis, which took second, and saw five wrestlers leave as champions. Nine Mustangs medaled for their team en route to their championship Tuesday at Aptos High School.
Nick Aguilar (106), Gavin Melendez (120), Alex Felix (132), Matt Penyacsek (182) and Mark Penyacsek (220) all took first in the tournament for Gilroy.
Felix was also named Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
Joe Delgado (113) took second for Gilroy, while Victor Daza (138) finished third. Tony Andrade (195) claimed fifth and Juan Villarreal (160) placed sixth.
Aguilar won his finals match and remained undefeated with a 7-0 decision over Izzak Olejnik from Bakersfield. Felix did the same with a 6-2 decision over Anthony Wesley from Jesuit.
Melendez picked up his first championship with a 3-2 decision over Rico Huerta from Alisal.
Matt Penyacsek won by tech fall over Chase Larson from Enochs in his finals match. His brother, Mark, won by a 4-0 decision against Dustin Dukleth from Foothill.
Delgado was bested by Isaiah Perez from Pitman in the championship match and lost by an 8-2 decision.
Daza’s first loss came in the semifinals at the hands of Bakersfield’s Mark Rodriguez by a 3-0 decision.
Andrade was beaten in the quarterfinals by Liberty’s Richard Ybarra-Brant in an 11-6 decision. He won two straight matches, but lost against in the consolation semifinals to Christian Murabito from Saratoga by a 6-4 decision to land himself in the fifth place match. It was here he topped Menlo-Atherton’s Donald La Haye by fall at 3:54.
Villarreal also lost his quarterfinal match-up with Clovis’ Jared Hill by fall at 3:40. He won two straight before Jimmy Hoang from American Canyon picked up a 4-2 decision in the consolation semifinals. Hill once again beat Villarreal by decision in the fifth place match by a 5-3 decision.
The Mustangs will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 7 in a dual meet at North Salinas.
Garcia takes 3rd at Reno, earns All American title
Losing his second match didn’t discourage Christopher’s Alex Garcia. In fact, it only seemed to fuel him.
The senior wrestler won his first match, but dropped his second to the No.4 seed and sophomore national champion of the Reno Tournament Dec. 20. He then went on to win four straight matches, setting up a rematch with the sophomore and this time, he won. Garcia picked up three more wins to claim third place and the title of All-American. (If you place in the Top 3 at the Reno Tournament, you’re named an All-American.)
Riley Siason, wrestling at 113, went 2-2 at the tournament and Jacob Myers, 152, finished 1-2. Mario Anchando, 132, finished 0-2.

The Cougars will be back in action at the Cupertino Tournament Saturday.
