Prep Roundup: Nov. 5

Christopher sent three players to the girls tennis playoffs, all of who advanced to the semifinals. Unfortunately for the Cougars, their season ended there. 
Singles player Jade Bardrick and the doubles players Adena Chen and Liz Levan lost their matches in the semifinals, but topped their opponents in the consolation bracket to claim third place Tuesday at the Monterey Bay League finals at Chamisal Tennis Club in Carmel. 
Gilroy’s No. 1 doubles team of Savanna Brandon and Mya Esquivel made their own run Monday, but fell to North Salinas 4-6, 6-1, 3-10 to miss the semifinals. 
The Mustangs’ No. 2 singles player Nicole Holder won her first round match on Monday, beating her opponent from North Salinas. Holder then faced Bardrick and was bested by her crosstown opponent. 
Gilroy’s Jessica Martin, Angela Martin and Maggie Pickford all lost their matches in the first round. 
GIRLS WATER POLO
Cougars top Mustangs in MBL Tournament
Christopher opened the Monterey Bay League Pacific Division Tournament with a 14-3 win over Gilroy Tuesday at Aptos. 
Malaya Santos led the charge with four goals in the game. The sophomore added two assists and two steals for the Cougars. 
Ashley Irby and Natalie Garcia added three goals a piece. The duo also had two assists and three steals each. 
The Cougars were dominant from the start, scoring seven goals in the first period and another in the second to lead 8-3 at the half. Gilroy kept it close in the third, but was outscored by CHS 3-2. 
Christopher finished with three goals to Gilroy’s one in the final frame. 
Hannah Marquez, Sabrina Seery and Paige Gallardo each had a goal for Christopher. Seery also had four steals and two assists. 
Freshman Erika Cates scored two of the goals for Gilroy and Arriane Lussier added one.
Nicole Andresen came up with 12 stops in net for the Cougars. 
Christopher will face Harbor in Round 2 at 5 p.m. Thursday at Aptos. Gilroy will take on Alvarez at 4 p.m. today.
BOYS WATER POLO
Christopher bests Alvarez
The Cougars have faced Alvarez in their last two contests and have been them both times. But this time, there was a lot more on the line. 
Christopher opened the Monterey Bay League Pacific Division Tournament with an 11-5 win over the Eagles Tuesday at Aptos. 
Zach Gallardo led the team with four goals on seven shots, followed by Gordy Papalias who went 3 for 7. 
Christopher fell behind 3-1 early in the first quarter—which Cougar coach Paul Wells said was due to a new defensive structure. The Cougars readjusted and led 4-3. 
Alvarez landed a “Hail Mary” shot which went the length of the pool with one second remaining in third to cut Christopher’s lead to 10-4 at the end of the quarter. 
The Cougars (8-9 overall) will take on the No. 1 seeded Robert Louis Stevenson at 5 p.m. Thursday at Carmel. 
SLV tops Gilroy
San Lorenzo Valley scored five goals in each of the four quarters to cruise a 20-5 win over Gilroy in the opening round of the Monterey Bay League Pacific Division Tournament Tuesday. 
Gilroy scored two goals in the second and added another in each of the other three. Stats from this game were not available. 
The Mustangs (1-8 overall) will take on Harbor in the consolation bracket at 5 p.m. today at Alvarez High School. 
FIELD HOCKEY
Mustangs edge out St. Ignatius
Gilroy secured third place in the Mt. Hamilton Athletic League with a 2-1 win over St. Ignatius at home Tuesday. 
Maddie Cox scored on a redirection from Katrina Carter and Morgan Rogers found the back of the net off an assist from Tayler Silacci to give Gilroy a 2-0 lead at the half. 
St. Ignatius scored halfway through the second, but the Mustangs were able to regain their composure to hold off their opponents for the rest of the game. 
“We were (able to) maintain good offensive bouts for the final 8-10 minutes, getting multiple shots and short corners,” Gilroy coach Adam Gemar said. “Their goalie played outstanding while withstanding the onslaught of our shots and rebounds.”
Mustang goalie Jackie Jauregui was named Player of the Game for combating St. Ignatius’ pressure to her team in the lead. 
Gilroy (18-2-3 overall, 10-2-1 in league) will host Presentation at 3:30 p.m. Thursday for the regular season finale. Seedings for the Central Coast Section playoffs will be announced Monday with competition starting Thursday.
VOLLEYBALL
Mustangs end season with a win
Gilroy ended its season on a high note, topping North Monterey County 3-1 Tuesday at home. 
Seniors Gabby Martinez, Sarhay Luna and Concetta Fredericks shined in their final game, helping the Mustangs to a 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20 win over the Condors. 
Fredericks had two kills, while Luna served up an ace in the game. Martinez racked up 10 straight service points which helped Gilroy climb out of an 18-9 hole in the fourth set. The Mustangs took the lead and never looked back. 
Sarah Weiby was on the attack, racking up double-digit kills for Gilroy. Jenna and Evelyn Clonts combined for six blocks in the game. 
The Mustangs end their season with a 4-13 overall record, 3-10 in league play. 
Cougars swept by Balers
San Benito completed the season sweep of Christopher, beating it 3-0 Tuesday in Hollister.
The Cougars lost 12-25, 17-25, 11-25 to the Balers. 
Stats from this game were not yet available. 
Christopher (14-11 overall, 5-7 in league) will close out the regular season with Notre Dame at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at home.
