Authorities investigate reports of 'suspicious white powder'

Authorities responded to a home on the 200 block of Martin Road Thursday afternoon, after a caller discovered a “suspicious white powder substance,” according to acting Fire Capt. Greg Lopez. The San Jose Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team determined at approximately 3 p.m. the substance was not hazardous.
The caller first tipped off the Gilroy Police Department after a suspicious package was left on the steps near the front door, said GPD. Sgt. Pedro Espinoza. The GPD then asked for the support of the Gilroy Fire Department.
“The Gilroy Fire Department responded and arrived and we determined that we had no means to determine what the substance was,” Lopez said. “The San Jose Hazardous Materials Team was requested and they entered the site and determined that the substance was non-hazardous.”
Officials with both fire departments began clearing the scene at roughly 3:12 p.m. and the investigation was turned back over to the GPD.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
