McHugh elected board of supervisors chair
Santa Clara County Supervisor Pete McHugh, a Milpitas resident, was elected to chair the county’s decisionmaking board through 2008.
McHugh’s term will be his third and last in a year that he anticipates will be “challenging,” he said in a statement. His focus, the statement stated, will be outlining initiatives and strategies as the county continues to find ways to shore up a $155 million budget shortfall. McHugh, one of five board members, represents District 3. District 1, which includes Gilroy and Morgan Hill, is represented by Don Gage.
McHugh will deliver the State of the County Address at the board’s next meeting on Jan. 29. He will speak at 11 a.m.
McHugh was first elected to the board in 1996. The Boston native attended Boston University before moving to southern California, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UCLA and then worked for IBM for three decades.
Cal Fire moves to winter preparedness levels
Thanks to the wet weather and cool temperatures, area CalFire stations have moved to winter staffing levels.
The transition allows CalFire to release some seasonal firefighters, reduce staffing on fire engines and close some remote wildand fire stations. However, CalFire is prepared to call resources back if fire weather conditions make it necessary. This transition also coincides in many areas with the permitting of residential debris burning.
CalFire is the state of California’s fire department and continues to respond to all types of emergency responses including structure fires, medical aids, and traffic accidents in communities across California.
