Problem:

A week ago, a Red Phone caller informed us that the electronic speed signs on Mantelli Drive were not working, and he said he thought they were placed in the wrong location.

One is at the top of the hill, the other at the bottom, and every time a car passes, one sign reads “88,” the other does not work.

Who can fix it:

Don Dey is the lead traffic engineer for the city. As for the location of the signs, Dey said they were installed on Mantelli Drive west of Rancho Hills Drive a couple of months ago at the request of the residents.

“There’s a traffic safety concern on that hill because of the grade of the hill which is really extreme and because of the curve. Residents wanted to know what could be done to make that portion of the hill safer. This is one attempt to make things safer. The signs allow motorists to see what speed they are driving to make them more aware.”

The signs, given to the city by the county, are permanently mounted on speed limit signs.

The one at the bottom of Mantelli Drive as motorists head west, always posts an “88” mph reading. The one at the top of hill near Columbine Court as motorists head east, does not provide a reading as vehicles pass.

Update:

“I’ll have a tech get out there and check it out,” Dey said of the malfunctioning signs.
