A 23-year-old motorcyclist from Union City ran off the road, hit a utility pole and fractured his spine northwest of Gilroy.

The accident occurred in unicorporated Gilroy near Watsonville and Pharmer roads early Sunday morning. The California Highway Patrol responded to the accident which involved only the man.

He was transported to a San Jose area hospital where he was treated for his injuries, police said. His injuries, however, were not life threatening.
