Police help Colony Way residents with wayward RV
“The (recreational vehicle) parked on Colony Way is gone. Thanks for everything and thanks to (Gilroy Police Department) too. We’ll keep you posted if it returns.”
Dear Pleased,
Red Phone breathes a deep sigh of contentment after hearing a reader’s problem is solved. Good job Gilroy police. Please let Red Phone – and police – know if it returns and is again parked illegally.
A heap of questions
“You’ve had a letter writer the past two or three years complaining about Measure I’s lack of accountability. Now an editorial (in the April 4 issue) is talking about a new bond for the school district. (The accountability task force) didn’t do much good on Measure I. What good are they going to do here except take the money and run? No. 2, tell Cynthia Walker if she wants to babble about religion to do so outside the newspaper. No. 3, suggest to Mark Derry that he’s far more intelligent than to simply write a gossip column putting peoples names in bold. Maybe this is something people like, but I don’t.”
Dear I Have a Suggestion,
Red Phone needs a moment to take it all in. OK, let’s answer your questions in order. No, 1, the accountability task force that oversees Measure I was formed to ensure the money was spent according to what voters approved. Now, you can argue about what should have taken priority, but the funds were slated to be used to build two new elementary schools, add extra classrooms and a new student center at Gilroy High School, renovate old and outdated classrooms and facilities and build phase I of the new Christopher High School. It did all of these except build all of phase I of CHS. It can be argued whether or not district officials should have planned for the extenuating circumstances that resulted in the higher cost of the new high school, but it can’t be argued that the rest of the projects were completed. Red Phone is confident a new task force will hold the district accountable, if a bond makes the ballot and passes.
No. 2, as Red Phone reported in that same April 4 issue, Cynthia Walker does not write exclusively about her Christian beliefs. If she did, that would be something the paper would have an issue with. Ms. Walker often challenges conventional thinking, and that fulfills one of the paper’s objectives – to make people think.
No. 3, Red Phone knows full well how much the editor really appreciates a backhanded compliment and reports that he may endeavor to be more serious from time to time in his column, though the editorials fulfill that obligation. And who says taking the Santa Clara Valley Water District to task is just gossip (even if SCVWD is in bold type).
What’s up with car wash?
“I’m curious as to what’s going on with the car wash on First Street at Kern Avenue? It used to be a nice place to go for a quick wash and dry, but now it’s all torn up. I’d Like to know what’s going on? Thanks Red Phone.”
Red Phone:
Red Phone contacted Bill Faus, planning director, who said the car wash was purchased recently, and the new owner submitted plans to re-build, which were reviewed and approved by the planning commission and the city council last year.
“We should see the new facility up and running by this summer,” he said.
So good caller, be patient, and hopefully by this summer you’ll have a brand new place to pamper that vehicle of yours.
