GILROY – Gilroy High’s girls tennis team lost its first match of the season Thursday, dropping all but one match out of seven to visiting Notre Dame.

Emily Castro pulled out the Mustangs’ lone victory on the day, beating Brenda Ponce 11-9 in the third set tiebreaker after winning the first set 6-3 and dropping the second 4-6.

“She was down in the tiebreaker and true to Emily’s competitiveness, she came back and won,” Gilroy coach Jami Reynolds said.

In total, three of the seven matches went to tiebreakers, with Gilroy losing the other two by a score of 11-9.

“All in all it was a very close battle,” Reynolds said. “I thought we could have taken all the tiebreakers.

“I’m still proud that they hung in there and put everything they had out on the court.”

The Mustangs will return to the court Tuesday at Salinas.
