The City of Gilroy has just launched its new Web site. The new site is easier to use, navigate, is more functional, has a more contemporary look, and will support the city’s new online web services such as online police reports, online class registration, and future services such as paying utility bills online and video news releases, some of which are in beta testing now.
More than 10 months ago, a Web Redesign Committee was created with a representative from each department. The Web Redesign Committee reviewed hundreds of public and private sector Web sites selecting some of the best features from these Web sites for the new design.
This new Web site will constantly evolve around the basic framework now presented. Another major change, though not visible to the public user, is that the new site is now hosted internally on city of Gilroy Servers. This is a major change as the previous site was designed, hosted and maintained by a second-party contractor, Infolane, of Oakland.
The first city of Gilroy Web site was launched in 1987, followed by a major redesign in 2003. In 2007 the city created and filled a new staff position of Web master, in part to begin development and maintenance of the new site. The city Web site should be a valuable and much used tool for communicating information not only about city government and services, but also as a pathway to useful and interesting information of all types.
