There may have been some lingering frustrations following a disappointing loss to San Mateo the day before as the Christopher High girls basketball team exploded for a 69-21 victory against Overfelt on Day 2 of Dons Club Holiday Tournament hosted by Del Mar High on Wednesday.
After just four players scored during Tuesday’s loss, nine Cougars got into the scorebook during Wednesday’s win, which moves CHS into the consolation final versus Mt. View at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Del Mar in San Jose.
Hanna Tabron paced all scorers with 16 points, Olivia Tabron had her second straight double-digit scoring night with 14, Cydney Caradonna and Dejah Raoof each contributed 11 points and Maddie Peterson chipped in seven. Also, Ashanti Clayton had four points, while Sophia Amelia, Jenni Sigl and Ebony Stevens had two apiece.
CHS ran away with matters in the first half, staking out to a 43-15 advantage at intermission.
• The Gilroy High boys basketball team shook off a forgettable overtime loss to Damonte Ranch on Tuesday with a more Mustang-like 52-42 victory over host Sobrato in the second round of the Bulldog Chase Tournament on Wednesday in Morgan Hill.
The Mustangs will play for the consolation championship versus Union Mine today at 4:30 p.m. at Sobrato High.
The Bulldogs held a 22-13 lead – their largest of the night – with 2:30 left before halftime. But Gilroy answered with a 7-0 scoring run, capped by Jonathan Lester’s 3-pointer with five seconds left, to pull within 24-20 at the break.
Sobrato was held to three points for the first six minutes, 15 seconds of the third quarter. The Mustangs took the lead for good during that time, as Christian Goldstein poured in six of his game-high 21 points on 3-for-3 shooting. Charles Walker helped Gilroy turn the tide off the glass.
The Mustangs held their biggest lead, 43-32, after Goldstein hit a trey to start the fourth quarter.
Lester finished with 16 points while shooting 6-of-8 from the field, and Walker had eight points and four rebounds.
• For the second straight day at the Golden State Invitational, the Gilroy High boys soccer team surrendered five goals and ended up on the losing end of a 5-3 nod against Richmond at Bellarmine High School – the tournament host – on Wednesday in San Jose.
Gilroy fell 5-1 to Watsonville in the opening round of the tournament Tuesday.
On Wednesday, the Mustangs (3-3) trailed 3-1 at halftime and both squads tallied a pair of goals in the second half as Richmond preserved its two-goal cushion.
Jonathan Diaz De Leon, Alejandro Flores and Gabriel Contreras each netted goals for the Mustangs, who continue at the four-day event today at 2:45 p.m. against Loyola High out of Los Angeles.
• Head coach Kort Jensen said his team flat out “out of gas” playing its third game in as many days, and the momentum from a solid 44-30 win against Seaside on Tuesday didn’t carry over to Wednesday as the GHS girls basketball team lost to Oakmont-Roseville 51-38 on Day 3 of the Seaside Sweet 16.
“We were out rebounded by a very large margin and our transition defense was very slow,” Jensen said. “Turnovers are another area we need to improve on. It was simply not our day. But any coach would love to coach these girls as they always have fun and keep their heads up.”
Ashlee Williams led the Mustangs with 12 points. GHS wraps up the tournament today at Noon against Harbor.
