Seven in all receive top-seven seed; Christopher High’s Jimmie
Lopez No. 3 at 103
There were not many surprises in the official batch of wrestler seedings for this weekend’s Central Coast Section Championships.
Seven of the 13 grapplers representing the eight-time defending section champion Gilroy High wresting team are seeded in the top-seven, including four No. 1 distinctions.
A runner-up in his first two CCS finals appearances, junior Willie Fox is the tournament’s No. 1 seed at 130 pounds. Defending champ at 135 pounds, junior Blake Kastl received the No. 1 spot in the same weight class. Freshman Paul Fox (112) and Nikko Villarreal(125) each tabbed No. 1-seeds in their divisions while reigning titleholder at 103 pounds, sophomore Leif Dominguez, was slotted in at No. 2, sandwiched between two freshmen in No. 1 Isiah Locsin of Live Oak and Christopher High’s Jimmie Lopez at No. 3.
Junior Aaron Gonzales picked up the No. 2 seed at 140 pounds, behind last season’s 135-pound runner-up Nick Cano of Saint Francis. The Lancers have finished second behind the Mustangs the past two year’s and will have 14 wrestlers in action, including six seeded in the top-seven.
Rounding out the Mustangs’ seeded wrestlers in 119-pounder Victor Olmos, who is No. 6.
The two-day wrestling event gets underway Friday at 10 a.m. at Independence High School in San Jose. The finals are slated for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
