Dear Editor,

I disagree with the editorial board’s position on the current situation the South County Collaborative faces with the overbilling by Francisco Dominguez as their contractor. The assertion that they decided not to press charges is incorrect. What they have done is follow the advice of legal counsel and put priority on recovering the funds overpaid. Bringing law enforcement in before receiving that commitment risked the situation devolving into an unproductive lawsuit they could ill afford.

Caution and discretion is not the same as lack of transparency. The characteristically careful manner with which Lynn Magruder has avoided pointing fingers in the media and dealt with this very painful and difficult situation for the Collaborative is not a common response to situations in Gilroy, where it seems heads must roll publicly to demonstrate action. I do not excuse the overbilling; neither does the Collaborative, and I want to see accountability for whatever is proven done wrong.

However, while I do not doubt your frequent depictions of John Blaettler as full of integrity, the same must be said of Lynn Magruder and the other Collaborative board members as well.
