HOLLISTER — The Gilroy High boys’ tennis team came close to edging its rival in San Benito on Thursday, but the host Balers may have found the edge in doubles.

For the fourth time this season, the San Benito boys’ tennis team swept the doubles portion of its match and managed to outlast visiting Gilroy as a result en route to a 4-3 victory at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

With a sweep at doubles earning the Balers three wins, the team got its fourth win at No. 1 singles, where Jacob Garcia defeated Gilroy’s Victor Vong 7-6, 6-3.

The Mustangs won the remaining three singles matches, however. Andrew Costa topped Nick Trillo 6-3, 6-0; Joseph Leong did the same to Alex Reilly 6-2, 7-6; and Justin Cho followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Travis Mills.

But San Benito’s sweep of the doubles division lifted the Balers to a one-point win.

At No. 1, Kyle Skinner and Eric Johnson remained undefeated in TCAL play when they beat Andrew Hathaway and Ryan Case 6-1, 6-0; San Benito’s Sunny Singh and Brian Becerra remained undefeated on the season when they beat Eric O’Reiley and Josh Sontag 6-4, 6-1; while Jacob and Andrew Panger defeated Bobby Kwong and Ryan Jansky 6-0, 6-1.
