Gilroy Mayor Al Pinheiro sat down with about a dozen residents Saturday morning at City Hall to drink coffee and discuss any concerns they might have had.
– Pinherio announced the Gilroy City Council’s annual retreat would take place Jan. 28-29. The agenda for the retreat would be released soon, and the retreat itself would be open to the public, he said.
– The mayor addressed concerns of jaywalking downtown, along with bicyclists and skateboarders cruising up and down sidewalks in front of businesses. Pinheiro said he would make a suggestion to the Gilroy Police Department that, once a month, officers could set aside “an hour or two” to focus on monitoring and citing jaywalkers and those who violate the city’s bicycles/skateboards rules for certain downtown sidewalks.
– Responding to concerns over a lack of resident input on city financial issues, Pinheiro said budget study sessions would be put on the city’s calendar. Public comment is allowed during study sessions.
– Local developer Gary Walton told Pinheiro the city needed to install new lighting downtown. The current lighting “makes downtown look like a dingy industrial area,” Walton said. Pinheiro said, “We will look to see what we can do.”
