Gilroyans should get ready to see a new population total on the Garlic Capital’s city limits signs.

The city’s population is less than 50,000, according to totals released Monday by the California Department of Finance. The new estimate is 49,391, the numbers show, a 1.1 percent increase from a year ago.

Early estimates from last year stated Gilroy’s population was 52,027, though that estimate was lowered to 48,836 using recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau, according to a Monday press release.

The Department of Finance uses figures from the U.S. Census Bureau as benchmarks, but each year the number changes depending on how many people are born, die or relocate, said John Malson, acting chief of the Department of Finance’s demographic research unit. The Department of Finance also uses city reports of how many new homes are expected to be built, applying that figure to current persons-per-household estimates.

Santa Clara County as a whole grew 0.9 percent.
