It’s great when you hear from former Dispatch newsroom folks who have gone on to further success. Young Katie Helland, a San Martinian who interned with us a few summers back, sent this along: “I am excited to report that I have accepted an internship in Washington D.C.! I will be working as an intern for the public policy department of The Wilderness Society. … I talked about many of my experiences in the Dispatch newsroom during my interview. I know that the skills I learned at the Dispatch will definitely help me as I work with lobbyists this summer.” So, community members, remember when that Dispatch summer intern calls with 1,000 questions, you’re helping them on their journey to a successful career.

One of the toughest career paths is to make it to The Show as a catcher in Major League Baseball. Chris Gimenez, a catcher, has been working hard toward that goal for years now. He’s with the Seattle Mariners now after a long stint with the Cleveland Indians organization. But the big news in the Gimenez clan is that Chris and his wife Kellie are expecting in November and they’re building a home in Reno. He and his wife met at the University of Nevada, Reno. Chris’ mom, Pam, holds down the fort at the Gilroy Visitor’s Bureau, “God, he loves what he’s doing!,” she says. “It’s such a joy to watch him on TV and think … that’s my kid!” Perseverance and passion. That’s what it takes to get where Chris is.

Passionate volunteers, interested in helping support our local Saint Louise Hospital, are needed for the upcoming Your Neighbor for Life Second Annual Golf Tournament Monday, June 13, at the enchanting Boulder Ridge Golf Course in San Jose. Player check-in, tee ambassadors, contest spotters, barbecue helpers, needed to assist hospital foundation CEO Michele Averill and chief organizer Lissa Gaffney. Lissa guarantees a fun day or your volunteer money back. Ring her up at 779-4510. Golfers can sign up online at www.slrhfoundation.org. It’s a special tourney, so sharpen your sticks, get ready to meet some San Jose Sharks players, enjoy an authentica peppersteak sandwich lunch, and receive a fantastically warm greeting from the engaging course co-owner, Glenda Garcia. On course refreshments are included – always a welcome amenity after your ball ping pongs off one of those gloriously large and sneaky boulders adjacent to the fairway.

Unfairway, really, to get ambushed while watching a Sharks playoff game at the always-packed and friendly Stubby’s sports bar and grill. But that’s how far Procurement Queen Patty Giacalone is willing to go to land auction items for the Gilroy Foundation’s fall extravaganza which is being chaired this year by the charming and vivacious Miss Karen La Corte. The theme is – a “Night in Argentina.” Under Karen’s wing, the “Night” will have more flair than a flaming flamingo dance under a Thunder Moon. Anyway, Patty worked her magic and “forced” Miss Jenny and I into agreeing to host a poker party at our house. Get your checkbooks ready, folks. We’ll likely be rolling out the spiced up Frida Kahlo themed dinner and a new deck of cards.

Dealt a rough hand is Minnie, a blind since birth 5-year-old cattle dog mix, surrendered to the animal shelter by her owners who have fallen on hard financial times. Doreen Smith, who runs All About Critters – a great resource if your dog needs a walk, hike or overnight care when you need a break – is trying to help find Minnie a home: Here’s Doreen’s number 408-910-9194 and a heart-tugging photo of Minnie who’s more than a little bit lost at the shelter. Hopefully, this story will end well.

SJ Sharks story, most hopefully, will end well tonight (I’m writing on Thursday) so that the dream for Gilroy – a photo of “Mayor” Rich Perez hoisting the Stanley Cup – remains alive and well.

Well done is not the way to fire up a “Mesquite” tri-tip from Rocca’s Market in San Martin. The Roadhouse marinade makes this a mouth-watering choice if you enjoy a little spicy flavor. Pair that with Rocca’s fresh homemade salsa from the refrigerated case in back and you’ve almost got the meal made … for the finishing touch, pick up a bottle of San Martin grown extra virgin Frantoio Grove Olive Oil, some sea salt and good vanilla ice cream. Scoop, dust with salt, Frantoia oil “syrup” on top – you’re gonna really like it. Come to think of it Miss Procurement Queen Patty Giacalone, a picnic in the olive grove with a tour from owner Jeff Martin and a few bottles of wine would be a great auction item …

Two great items back-to-back in downtown Gilroy this weekend: Wine tour on Saturday and Robert Guerrero Day on Sunday. Good thing the powers that be didn’t combine the two or we might have had wine fights breaking out all over.

The breakout, City Hall furlough-ending budget delivered to the City Council from City Administrator Tom Haglund depends on a 15.94% year-over-year increase in the sales tax revenue Gilroy collects. Just not sure if the new Forever 21 store in the outlets can support that promise. We’ll see. it’s a keep-your-fingers crossed budget. Heard from one knowledgeable person who said, “With all due respect to the City Administrator, those sales tax revenue projections seem like so much hot air. And do you want to live in a community which bases its budget so much on traffic fines?” Hefty budget for parking fines, too, so Gilroyans be very careful out there.

Careful at the gas pump not to have a heart attack these days given the jump up in prices, so the new stretching exercise charts flanking the pumps at Bozzo’s 76 on First Street are amusing and functional as stress reducers … just ignore the pump price and dive right into the Rubbernecker, the Wide Turn, the Backup and the Leadfoot …
