Morgan Hill – Four San Jose residents were arrested early Thursday morning after a report of counterfeit money changing hands at the Shell gas station at East Dunne Avenue and Walnut Grove Drive.

Morgan Hill police responded to a report of someone trying to pass a counterfeit $50 at the gas station, Cmdr. David Swing said. When officers arrived, they found the man who tried to pass the bill still at the station. He told police that he was approached by two men in the parking lot looking for change for a $50, and he gave them two $20s and two $5s. He didn’t realize the bill was counterfeit, he told officers, until he tried to use it at the station.

Officers learned the two men who changed the counterfeit bill were seen running across East Dunne Avenue. Two cars were found parked behind the Chevron gas station next to the restaurant, Swing said. Inside one of the vehicles were two brothers.

Terry Spence, 27, was on parole for resisting arrest causing serious injury or death to a peace officer. He was arrested on suspicion of parole violation, possession of counterfeit money and possession of burglary tools and for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Spence’s brother, Kevin Tigue, 36, was on probation for possession of a controlled substance, being under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of burglary tools. Swing said 17 counterfeit $50s were found in his wallet, and he was arrested on suspicion of probation violation, possession of counterfeit bills and possession of drug paraphernalia and for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Because of their status, the vehicle they were in was searched. Officers found a computer printer and burglary tools during the search, he said.
