Morgan Hill – Sheriff’s deputies were tight-lipped after a severe assault that left a mushroom plant worker badly injured.

The unidentified man was leaving work at Monterey Mushroom Company, 642 Hale Ave., at 5:30pm Wednesday when he was attacked by an unknown person or persons, causing severe trauma. He was transported to San Jose Regional Hospital and remained in serious condition Thursday, said Sheriff’s Deputy Serg Palanov.

Palanov declined to specify what weapon was used or the nature of the man’s injuries, and could not say if the incident was gang-related. Detectives spent Thursday combing the plant for clues and interviewing other workers. Staff at the Morgan Hill plant declined to comment on the incident, referring the Dispatch to Ray Selle in the company’s corporate office in Watsonville.

“At this point we have nothing definitive to say,” wrote Selle in an e-mail. “When we know more about the circumstances and the physical condition of the victim, we will provide a statement.”

Anyone with information on the assault may call Sheriff’s Sgt. John McIntosh at 808-4500.
