Gilroy – The school district board of trustees unanimously approved $429,200 to boost standardized test performance at Eliot and Rucker elementary schools, South Valley and Brownell middle schools, and Gilroy High School. The five schools are all in program improvement – a federal designation applied when a school has not met testing expectations for at least two consecutive years.

While the schools were given the money based on their submitted plans, the board stipulated that Brownell Principal Joseph DiSalvo consult his staff before his school is given any funds. He agreed to bring the plan up in a school staff meeting Monday and return to the board at its next regular meeting June 21.

The stipulation arose from disagreement among trustees as to the use of $40,000 at the school. Trustee Denise Apuzzo voiced objection to funding a standard-based report card. The money will be used for professional development for teachers so they can give more specific feedback to students along with grades, DiSalvo said.
