Salinas – North Salinas was able to hold strong in three games to defeat the visiting Gilroy girls’ varsity volleyball team 25-22, 25-21, 25-18 Tuesday night.
The Mustangs kept every game close but couldn’t quite get over the hump.
The junior varsity team lost 25-17, 26-24 while the freshman squad won 25-18 25-21.
“It was a close one all the way along,” coach Sue Grogan said. “I think all three teams, we went back and forth a lot. I don’t think there was any team that had a good lead at any time during the matches.”
Overall, the varsity Mustangs had 19 kills, seven service aces and three down-blocks. Loryn Ferreira led GHS with seven kills while Caitlin Chisolm and Lindsey Foster each had four.
The Mustangs received 11 digs and three aces from Libero Jasmine Perez, while also getting three service aces from Lindsay Meazell and one from Ferreira.
Ferreira, Meazell and Sarah UnaDia each had a block.
“They’ve got some pretty consistent players there and the girls were just, I don’t think my girls were at the top of their game,” Grogan said. “I see these flashes of greatness from these girls, but I’m not quite sure if they believe in themselves quite yet.”
The Mustangs next games will be played this Saturday at GHS in the 12-team Mustang Classic varsity volleyball tournament. Schools form across the Bay Area will be participating in the event.
