Garage sale bargains
Dear Red Phone:
So do you know what’s going on with the Gilroy Garage Sale Days? I remember getting an application in a utility bill last year but I didn’t see one this year. How do you sign up and can you give me some more information on this event?
Red Phone:
Dear Sale Daze:
You’re talking about the second annual Second Chance Week, September 8 -16 sponsored by the cities of Gilroy and Morgan Hill, and Santa Clara County. The idea is to give your stuff a second chance, help the community and the environment. It begins with a communitywide Gilroy Garage Sale on the weekend of September 8 -9 in Gilroy, and ends with a community garage sale in Morgan Hill the following weekend, September 15-16. Plus, there are events during the week such as “Donate & Shop at Local Thrift Stores Day” Tuesday, Sept. 11, and “Universal Waste Awareness Day” Monday, Sept. 10 – when you can get rid of items that are not accepted in your garbage such as rechargeable batteries, fluorescent lighting and other mercury-containing products.
As part of the project, anyone in the the community who would like to host a garage sale gets free advertising and free garage sale kits. Beginning September 7 a list of addresses will be available on the city’s Web site www.ci.gilroy.ca.us and at the Community Services Department at city hall. To get on the garage sale map, download and complete the application form from the site, then FAX or mail to Community Services Department, 7351 Rosanna St., Gilroy, 95020. To get more info on Second Chance Week, call 846-0460 (Gilroy) or 779-7247 (Morgan Hill).
More Pack Rating
Dear Red Phone:
Regarding the article about pack rats and their nests, it’s about people who come here and live in the United States and really don’t know the rules. You cannot keep a boat parked outside the curb for a period of time. I live next door to a young couple who do not speak any English, and are they very messy people. I am tired of seeing all their junk in their front yard. What’s with these people? How hard is it to keep it clean?
Red Phone:
Dear Ratting Out Your Neighbor:
You are drawing a correlation between a language spoken and front lawn etiquette. Unfortunately your theory heads south when Red Phone eyes its neighor, who was born in America, as was his father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, but keeps house like a colony of wood rats. Generalizing like that is not only dangerous, but says as much about you as your young neighbors. If you have a complaint for a vehicle to be removed in the city limits, call 846-0430.
