Let Elected Officials Run The City

Government center to arts center

Dear Red Phone:

What is the possibility that the Gilroy arts center could occupy the historic building Chips ‘N’ Salsa is located in now?

Red Phone:

Dear Renovator:

It’s highly unlikely an arts center could occupy the old City Hall building on Monterey Street, given the fact that the city has already invested $3.9 million in land for a new arts center. Plus, it’s hard to imagine how you could hold performances in the former government building. Even with major renovations, the building would not offer that much space. Sorry caller, but the Red Phone doesn’t think the idea will fly. But who is it to say?

Sidewalk talks

Dear Red Phone:

Last Saturday my 83-year-old mother tripped over a piece of sidewalk on Third Street that was being pushed up from an underlying tree root. In breaking her fall, her right thumb was broken. She’s not going to file a claim against anyone – she’s of that generation. She writes it off to being clumsy, but I went and looked at the broken sidewalk and anyone could have tripped over it; it’s jutting up 5 or 6 inches.

Red Phone:

Dear Side Note:

Who says phones don’t have feelings? Red Phone feels your mother’s pain. Red Phone called Don Dey, Gilroy’s traffic engineer, to get the dirt on the sidewalk problems. The city has a sidewalk task force that has drafted requests for maintenance of sidewalks citywide. The research the task force has compiled will be discussed along with a sidewalk ordinance in a council study session Monday. Keep your eye on the Dispatch to see if the city is going to walk the (side)walk, not just talk the talk.

Moving the festival

Dear Red Phone:

If the city takes over Gilroy Gardens, would the Garlic Festival be held there instead of Christmas Hill Park?

Red Phone:

Dear Move It:

That idea has been mentioned, though the public will likely have a say in that matter if the land is purchased. No doubt when it comes to the beloved Garlic Festival everyone will want a voice. Officials say they will put together a citizen’s task force to decide on the future use of the land.

Cheers to city staff

Dear Red Phone:

Instead of complaining about traffic signals and streetlights, I would like to compliment city staff Josh Bailey and Robert Asuncion for helping our neighborhood stay brighter and safer. Ever since we were victims of several crimes in our neighborhood, it’s nice to know that city workers care and are expedient about requests with streetlight outages. They even explained the details to us.

Red Phone:

Dear Pat on the Back:

Ahhhhh … It’s nice when Red Phone gets a call that’s not a gripe. Nevertheless, Red Phone thrives on gripes, so keep ’em coming.
