Present and Future Motoring in Gilroy

Driving miss crazy

Callers respond to “Bad Driving Stereotypes,” Sept. 12.

Dear Red Phone: The guy who complained about Mexican women drivers and his campaign for the police to start randomly pulling them over needs to pull his head out from the sand (can you tell that wasn’t my first choice of phrase?). The majority of drivers in Gilroy are Mexican and because women outnumber men and the percentage of Mexican women drivers is pretty high. Does he think the police should spend all their time profiling Mexican women just because he has had some bad experiences with them? I have been behind many a bad driver in my day, from all races and both genders. I could say that men are the ones that police should be targeting more because THEY are the ones, from my experience, that cut people off, speed, don’t use their turn signals and have a bad habit of driving while doing multiple things at one time.

Dear Red Phone: I’m calling about that guy about bad driving stereotypes about women, and how he thinks that they don’t know how to drive and he thinks they are stupid or something. And yet this guy wants cops to pull over random Mexican people?!! That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. How can you call someone stupid and then make a comment like that?

Dear Red Phone: I think this guy is kinda wacko. I’m almost 72 years old. I have been driving almost 50 years, and I have never been stopped. And I consider myself a good driver. I almost got hit by a white guy in front of the grocery store.

So now because of that I am going to label all white men as bad drivers! He’s right in the area about Mexican drivers not having licenses, but not about women being bad drivers. There are a lot of women who are good drivers, and men who are very bad drivers.

Dear Red Phone: I wanted to say that it does happen where women park in the red. And I don’t understand why these women don’t have common sense. I was picking up my child at Brownell school and the women behind me parked in the red. It would be nice if the police officers of Gilroy would try to pay attention to all that.

Dear Red Phone:

Let me tell you something: bad drivers are everywhere. Don’t assume only Mexicans are bad drivers. Check all the people talking on cell phones – they don’t stop at any signs. And also check your mother – I’m sure she’s too old to be driving and still have a license.

Red Phone:

Dear Callers: Red Phone had such a high volume of calls about bad driving, it had to take them on the cell phone in the car while eating lunch just to get through them all. After all that listening, Red Phone is exhausted, surly and refuses to take anymore calls about bad drivers because now its afraid to leave the office in fear of all of the crazies on the road. (Its thinking that teens on cell phones must be the worst though, because the state outlawed teens using cell phones.)

In lieu of calling the red phone, please focus your attention to the road! Oh, and, turn down the bass because regardless of what you may think, it doesn’t make you look cool. Whoops, sorry, need to hang up now. I almost ran over a bigot. Adios!
