Police briefs

As the temperature rises, so does crime. Incidents reported by the Gilroy Police Department included a felon riding with drugs, fake money and a gun, a random skateboard attack, thefts, robberies, child abuse and public sex. Here are those events:

Attack by skateboard

A 20-year-old male and a 16-year-old male were playing handball at Las Animas Park at 8 p.m. June 6 when three male suspects struck them in the heads from behind with skateboards. The victims tried to cover themselves while the suspects allegedly were shouting “get him.” The victims claimed they did not know what provoked them and they provided no physical description of the suspects. They were treated at a local hospital for their injuries.

Jewelry theft

Unknown suspects allegedly pried open the back door of Zales Jewels in the Gilroy Premium Outlets at 4:39 a.m. on June 6 and stole 166 pieces of jewelry worth a total of $142,000. The burglary was caught on camera, but the suspects were wearing hoods. The case has been assigned to a detective for further review.

Smoking hot robbery

Javier Coreas, 30, entered Staples on San Ysidro Avenue smoking a cigarette at 8:22 a.m. June 7. The store manager asked him to put it out, and Coreas allegedly told him to “mind his own business.” Later, the manager found him concealing a phone charger in his shirt and when the manager confronted him about it, Coreas allegedly threw a punch at him. Police arrested him at a nearby store and took him to Santa Clara County Jail.

Child left in hot car while pop shops

Reports of a 5-year-old boy left in a hot car at 5:15 p.m. June 7 led to the boy’s father, Reynaldo Magana of Watsonville, to be cited for child abuse. The car was parked outside Lacoste in the Gilroy Premium Outlets, where his father shopped while the boy slept in the car for at least 20 minutes during a 96 degree afternoon heat wave. Witnesses reported that the boy woke up from his nap and began honking the horn in distress trying to get his father’s attention.

Felon with gun, meth, counterfeit cash and more

Police pulled over a male driver for a vehicle code infraction at 1 p.m. June 8 who ended up being arrested for five felonies. John Angelino, 35 of Gilroy, was allegedly found with two grams of methamphetamines for sale, a concealed compact gun, $1,000 in counterfeit cash, a fake disabled driver placard and stolen checks. He also gave police a false name and provided them with a fake driver’s license. He was taken to Santa Clara County Jail for the above arrests.

Public sex, woman cited

Geanette Gardener was allegedly caught performing oral sex for a man behind a tree on the corner of Monterey and 10th streets at 4:30 p.m. on June 9. She was cited for lewd acts in public but released without charges. The case was referred to probation.
