Great question, caller. The Red Phone contacted the always helpful Don Dey, with the City of Gilroy’s Engineering Department.
According to Dey, the city has previously put in inquires with Caltrans regarding that intersection.
“For First Street, we’ve had conversations with Caltrans about putting in a left turn signal at that location and their response is that that direction doesn’t warrant it, according to their standards at this point,” he said.
But, perhaps you’ll see a turn signal at First and Church streets sometime in the future.
“We’ll keep monitoring until it comes up to the Caltrans standards,” Dey said. “We’ve checked into that and communicated with Caltrans, but since that is a state highway, Caltrans is the ultimate authority on what gets installed.”
Y no lights?
“A solution to the Pacheco Y intersection: Put a perpetual green light on eastbound 152, have a red flashing light for left turns from 156 to westbound 152. … on the flashing red light, there will be signs allowing the left turn if traffic allows the left turn to be done safely. All other traffic westbound 152 and left turn from 152 to 156 will not have any lights, just the perpetual green light for eastbound 152 traffic. Thank you.”

Hopeful for a housecall
“I’d like to have you check into a house where I live. There’s a house on the corner Church Street and they have a lot of weeds on the side of their house facing Seventh. Could you go and notify them that they have to clean it? There might be a fire if someone walks by and throws a cigarette. Thank you.”

Thanks for the notification, caller. Although you have a point that the weeds may be unattractive and perhaps a fire hazard, it’s up to the homeowner or renter to take care of such things. If there is a genuine fire hazard concern, perhaps a kindly neighbor might suggest a little Weedeating – or maybe even offer to do some.
Sorry, the Red Phone doesn’t make housecalls – though it did take a little drive to see the area you called in about. (The Red Phone’s seen worse.) All it can do is suggest that people take care of their property … and have a little consideration for those who live around you.
