Alejo introduces bill on Hospital CEO pension reform
Assemblymember Luis A. Alejo (D-Salinas) introduced AB 130 Tuesday, which will prohibit healthcare districts from paying retirement benefits to its chief executive officers and other executives while they are still employed.
“This bill prevents pension double-dipping problems and overly generous retirement benefit promises,” said Alejo in a press release. “It also improves the transparency and accountability for the policies that public entities have to manage the retirement benefits of their top executives.”
AB 130 was introduced to continue addressing concerns raised by the nonpartisan California State Auditor’s report on the Salinas Valley Memorial Health Care System. The state audit highlighted the fact that in December 2009, the former CEO received a $2.1 million gross payment from a supplemental retirement plan and $917,000 was rolled into a personal individual retirement account while still on payroll. The CEO continued working for another two years with a $668,000 annual salary.
This bill is eligible to be heard after Feb. 15, 2013 in a California State Assembly policy committee.
Luis Alejo represents the 30th District in the California State Assembly, which consists of the Salinas Valley, Monterey County, San Benito County, South Santa Clara County and the city of Watsonville in Santa Cruz County.
