Shannon McAvoy

Each month, the principals of Gilroy and Christopher high schools choose a total of four students (two from GHS and two from CHS) to spotlight. CHS junior Shannon McAvoy, 16, is this week’s Student of the Week.

What inspires you? I am most inspired by the incredible adults that I have been so fortunate to have in my life, especially the choir director Phil Robb. It’s been amazing to watch someone be so enthusiastic about everything they do and I hope to be just as passionate about everything I do in my life.

Favorite subject in school: My favorite subject has always been English because I love to read. Gilroy is great but it’s nice to dive into a book and escape for a little while.

If you could change one thing in the world: If I could change one thing in the world I would change the way people treat the environment. Earth is one of a kind and I wish people would be more cautious with it’s resources.

If you could go anywhere: If I could go anywhere I would go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida with my best friend Abby Kienle so we could live out our nerd fantasy!

One big challenge in your life right now: One big challenge in my life right now, as well as many other Juniors, is deciding where I want to go to college as well as deciding what I want to pursue with my education.

Dream job: My absolute dream job would be to work with large marine mammals, like dolphins, in a scientific or commercial setting. I would love to work for Sea World taking care of the animals or being a mammal instructor as a part of their entertainment division.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three things could you not live without? If I was stuck on a deserted island I could not live without my Harry Potter books, my water polo ball, or ice cream.

Favorite book: As nerdy as it is, my favorite book(s) is the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I have read other popular series such as “The Hunger Games” and “Lord of the Rings” but nothing can compare with the one and only Harry Potter.

Plans after high school: After high school I plan to go to college down south, most likely in San Diego. I’m not certain about what I want to pursue academically but I would love to continue playing water polo if possible.

Something that makes you smile: Being with my goofy friends makes me smile more than anything but a big water polo win definitely doesn’t make me frown!
