Gilroy Gardens won the Spice of Life Nonprofit of the Year

Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park launched their 2013 season last weekend with a day for Gilroy residents only – an event that drew an enormous amount of locals to the park.

According to Jane Howard, Welcome Center Director and Gilroy Gardens board member, 9,200 people came through the park’s gates on Saturday for Resident’s Day.

As Resident’s Day tradition dictates, anyone with a Gilroy zip code gets free entrance to the park and free parking for the day.

“People were just having a good time, we saw many folks with big smiles,” Howard said.

The day bought in three times as many people as the year prior, which was cursed with heavy rain, Howard said.

The following day, Easter Sunday, the park opened to the public and Gilroy Gardens volunteer Paul Kloecker said that day was considerably more quiet than Saturday.

Gilroy Gardens is a nonprofit horticulture-themed park on Hecker Pass Highway just west of town.
