Red Phone: Safety needed on 6th Street

I have a concern about the lack of lights at Hanna Street on
Welburn. It is an early-morning concern in addition to the evening.
There is a lot of traffic in the area. There are not even any light
poles. So we need some light on our path.

Light up my life

“I have a concern about the lack of lights at Hanna Street on Welburn. It is an early-morning concern in addition to the evening. There is a lot of traffic in the area. There are not even any light poles. So we need some light on our path.”

Red Phone: “Dear Left In The Dark, Unfortunately the city doesn’t have any plans on adding lights in existing areas, said City Engineer Don Dey.

“The only time the city gets involved with any street light design or installation is in a roadway construction project like along Santa Teresa and Monterey,” he said.

In some cities, property owners have set up a neighborhood improvement fund to handle issues such as lighting, Dey said. This may be an option for you if you are willing to pursue it.

With respect to the flag

“I was left with some old American flags when I bought my house. They are not in good shape and can not be flown. I know there is a proper way to dispose of the flag, I just cannot remember. Do you know anything about this?”

Red Phone: Dear Patriotic American, there are a couple of things you can do to properly dispose of your old flags. First, you can take them to the Veteran’s Building, 76 W. 6th St. The number there is 842-4913. Or, you can contact Boy Scout Troop 792. Go to www.gilroyscouting.org, click on flag retirement and fill out the online form. You can also contact them via e-mail at

or call 842-2526.

Banners annoying

“I know banners are cheap, but what can our city do to clean up the look of our community? Banners just create visual pollution.”

Red Phone: Dear Overwhelmed by Banners, These signs are exempt from permit requirements as long as they comply with guidelines found in the Gilroy Zoning Ordinance.

“Briefly stated, that section limits their size to no more than 30 square feet each and limits the number of banners a business may display to three. Banners may be displayed for a period of 30 calendar days. Such signs shall not be replaced within 90 calendar days after removal,” said Scott Barron, code enforcement officer.

If you think someone is violating this code, call 846-0264 to report it.

RV parking rules

“In Gilroy, is it legal to park an RV permanently in your driveway? What about putting an RV on your front lawn?”

Red Phone: Dear RV Blocking Your View, It is understandable that homeowners in such an area would be concerned of eyesores such as a big RV in the yard, but whether or not the rules are being followed must first be established.

Again, Barron referred Red Phone to Gilroy Zoning Ordinance, Section 33.30, which prohibits the parking of an RV or trailer on the lawn. However, it is allowed to be stored on the front yard area given that a few requirements are followed, such as it must be parked on a paved or approved driveway material, parked perpendicularly to the front curb and not extending at all over the public sidewalk.
