GILROY – Gilroy’s varsity track and field teams split in duals with Salinas Thursday afternoon at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex, as the GHS girls beat the visiting Cowboys 74-61 while the boys lost 90-46.
“The girls won, which is a big thing,” Gilroy coach Jeff Myers said. “I’d say it’s been 10 years.
“They all performed very well. All the girls came through with seconds and thirds too.”
Freshman Athena Alarcon won the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 23.70 seconds, Sarah Unadia won the 100 hurdles in 16.51, Savannah Silacci came in first in the 400 at 1:03.81 and Kathleen Miller outpaced the field in the 3,200 at 11:38.86.
In the field events, Sarina Sandoval won the shotput with a heave of 30 feet, 5 inches and Kim Johnson won the discus at 87-9. Lindsey Foster won the long jump on her last attempt at 15-5 ¼ and Julianne Leong took the triple jump at 30-9 ½.
While the Lady Mustangs captured first place in events of almost every discipline, the boys fared better in the sprints.
Peter Guenther recorded the fourth best time in the state in the 300 hurdles, Myers said, by finishing in a time of 39.08. He also set a personal record in winning the 100-meter dash (10.95) and just missed winning the 110 hurdles by a hundredth of a second, finishing in second behind John Prader (15.02).
Gilroy’s Jourdan Soares won two events, placing first in the high jump at 5-8 and winning the long jump at 18-9 ½.
Gilroy will have a day of rest before welcoming 40 teams and what is expected to be 1,800 entrants for the 39th Annual Avis Kelley Invitational being hosted at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex Saturday. Trials begin at 9 a.m. with finals heats beginning at noon.
