I want to know why Gilroy hasn’t done anything about all the
used cars cropping up on every corner, down the streets and in the
outlying areas of Gilroy that are for sale.

“I want to know why Gilroy hasn’t done anything about all the used cars cropping up on every corner, down the streets and in the outlying areas of Gilroy that are for sale.”

Dear Cropping up around Town, Cars sitting around waiting to be sold has become an issue in several cities now and it seems to be catching on.

Gilroy prohibits vehicles parked on a street with the purpose of displaying them for sale, according to the city municipal code. From 19th Avenue in San Francisco, through El Camino Real down the Peninsula, cars are no longer allowed to be left on the side of the street with for sale signs.

Scott Barron, code enforcement officer, said violators can be referred to Gary Muraoka with the Gilroy Police Department at 846-0320.

So, feel free to call your complaints in to the police department but if you do not see a change soon, let Red Phone know.

Campus police strongly needed

“My job takes me around many schools in the Gilroy area. In the mornings and afternoons, the parents picking up or dropping off their children are double parking, talking on their cell phones, stopping in the middle of the lane and blocking traffic while they give their child a kiss goodbye, etc … I would like to know why the officer at the high school isn’t enforcing the laws. Students are driving to and from school with other students in their cars, burning out of the back parking lot, using cell phone, etc… Is it going to take another child or two to be killed before laws are enforced?”

Dear What a Drag, Youth should be taught life lessons at school, including proper ways to drive and behave in the streets.

“The Gilroy Police Department takes all complaints of traffic safety very seriously. We have established the Neighborhood Traffic Safety Program to address traffic issues. I encourage the Red Phone caller to visit our Web site or come into the police department to work with the Neighborhood Traffic Safety Program on this issue. The caller can also call 846-0350 to report ongoing traffic issues,” said Sgt. Jim Gillio, spokesman for the Gilroy Police Department.

“Currently the Gilroy Police Department has one School Resource Officer for 14 schools. The SRO, dedicated traffic officer, and patrol officers do focus on traffic issues around all of our community schools as time permits. Several times a year, GPD works a ‘Safe Route to Schools’ campaign where we hire officers on overtime to focus on the traffic surrounding our schools.”

Extra trash unwanted

“I recently had an issue with my neighbor sneaking their trash into my trash can the night before pickup. I approached them and asked them to stop, explaining this was a potential misdemeanor/fine if caught (at least that is what I had heard). They ‘don’t understand what the big deal is.’ I’ve since noticed this same neighbor dumping their trash into other various cans along the block. How should I now approach this situation? Is this a police matter? Not sure that my other neighbors will take action.”

Dear Don’t Trash my Trash, Someone sneaking trash into your can in the evenings is bothersome but not something they can get in trouble for.

“I am not aware of a specific law violation for a neighbor adding garbage to another’s trash can unless the trash they are adding is in some way illegal (oil, car battery, toxic waste),” said Sgt. Jim Gillio, spokesman for the Gilroy Police Department.

Gillio said he spoke to Phil Coucheel, general manager of South Valley Disposal & Recycling. Couchee welcomes you to call him at 842-3358 so the South Valley Disposal & Recycling can monitor the neighbor’s trash levels to determine if they are receiving a sufficient level of service.

If something looks to be unusual, South Valley Disposal & Recycling might find you need a different type of service and would be willing to work with you on this issue.
