For the second time in a month, a purse was snatched from a Safeway customer in the store’s parking lot.

The latest strong-arm robbery occurred about 5:50 p.m. Saturday at the grocery store at 650 Tennant Station, police said. A 39-year-old Morgan Hill woman was pushing a shopping cart toward the store when an unknown man ran up from behind and grabbed her purse, which was inside the cart, according to Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Jerry Neumayer.

The man ran to a nearby car occupied by an awaiting driver and passenger. The purse snatcher entered the car and the driver fled toward the intersection of Tennant Avenue and U.S. 101.

Two witnesses who saw the robbery followed the suspects in their vehicle, but lost sight of the getaway car near Condit Road, Neumayer said.

The man who stole the purse was described as Hispanic, in his 20s, about 5-feet, 10-inches tall and 210 to 225 pounds. The getaway driver was described as a Hispanic man in his mid-20s, and the other passenger was described as a Hispanic man in his early 20s.

The getaway vehicle was reported to be a black Toyota Solaris, Neumayer said.

This incident is the second one of its kind reported at local Safeway stores in the last month. The first incident happened at the store on 840 East Dunne Ave., about 1:08 p.m. July 8. An unknown man approached a 72-year-old female from behind and grabbed her purse from her arm. The woman was walking to her car at the time of the robbery, police said. That suspect also ran to an awaiting getaway car, which was stolen from the San Jose area, and fled to the San Pedro Avenue area. The stolen car was ditched, and the suspects got into another car and fled to an unknown location, police said.

The suspects in both incidents have similar descriptions, Neumayer said.

The investigation into both incidents is ongoing as other leads are developed.
