The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the driver of a car that slammed under a big-rig trailer died from injuries sustained in the accident.

The female driver of the 2006 Dodge Charger, 19-year-old Gurvinder Chahal of Ceres, died on Tuesday, according to the coroner’s office. One male passenger of the vehicle, 18-year-old Simardeep Bhatia of Turlock, died on the scene that morning. Another passenger in the Charger, 18-year-old Jasbir Singh of Hughson, is alive.

The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. June 18 near the intersection of highways 152 and 156. The semi-truck driver, 57-year-old David Jones of Hayward, attempted an illegal U-turn and entered the dirt median with the vehicle’s front end as the trailer blocked the westbound lanes, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.

Chahal was driving at a “high rate of speed” and did not react quickly enough to avoid the truck, the spokeswoman said. The car then “collided into and drove underneath the semi-trailer,” she said.
