SALINAS – Vinh Vong took advantage of what his coach, John Langer, called a “good draw” in the Tri-County Athletic League boys’ tennis championships Thursday, advancing as far as the semifinals.
But the senior from Gilroy couldn’t overcome the tournament’s top seed, Farren Casad of Salinas, who won his third TCAL title Friday at Alvarez High School in Salinas.
Vong’s defeat followed victories on Thursday over Zach Nissen (6-4, 6-0) in the first round and P.J. Vargas (6-3, 7-6) in the second.
GHS’ No. 2 singles player, Matt Chan, lost to Mark Tobias in straight sets (6-4, 6-2), while the Mustangs’ top doubles pairing, Mitch Souza and Andrew Costa, won its first-round match in two close sets but fell short in the second match later in the day.
“Souza and Costa played very well in the first round, even coming back from an 0-3 deficit in the second set to win 6-4,” Langer said. ” It was a good season for these guys.”
