Responding to a tip that a fugitive who escaped from jail Thanksgiving eve was in town, Gilroy Police and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Deputies surrounded the Days Inn at 8292 Murray Ave., but didn’t find the suspect.
Police got a tip that Laron Campbell was at the hotel, but it didn’t prove true. He and Rogelio Chavez escaped from the downtown Santa Clara County Jail by sawing through bars and using bed sheets to get down from the second-story window.Â
Two other men escaped with them but were caught right away.
Chavez was booked in August on charges of burglary, extortion, false imprisonment, criminal threats and firearms violations.Â
Campbell was booked in February 2015 on suspicion of robbery, false imprisonment, criminal threats and firearms violations.Â
Sheriff Laurie Smith is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to their capture.Â
