Trees look terrible: “The trees the city said they were going to landscape the new water tank out there at Santa Teresa and Thomas with to make it look pretty, well those trees are all dying. … The city must have paid a lot of money for those trees and they should get someone who knows what they’re doing in terms of planting around something like that. It looks as gawd-awful now as it did without any landscaping at all. Thanks.”
After several calls, the Red Phone found out that the city’s already on this one, which you’ll notice if you drive by the trees on Santa Teresa Boulevard this week. City workers cut down the ailing and dead redwood trees Monday, according to Gilroy Operations Manager Carla Ruigh.
The city’s arborist inspected the trees but was unable to determine what caused them to die, so they proceeded with removal. The city plans to replant trees in the next two to three months.
George Bush … huh?: “Hi, I’m calling because I just read the Red Phone column and people responding to the sex offender that was caught. I’m just curious what voting for George Bush and the opinion about the sex offender has anything to do with one another. I think we can all agree that the person who was arrested for planning on being a sex offender or was a sex offender, that was wrong and unacceptable. But what that has to do with voting for George Bush, I’m a little confused. Thanks.”
• “What I’d like to say is that basically the person who called in responding to the guy who said some people have weaknesses. This guy called in and said this must be a person who voted for George Bush. … He wanted to know what part of illegal the other guy didn’t understand. I think he may have had the President wrong. I think he meant President Bill Clinton because Bill Clinton certainly had a problem with the definition and he also had a thing for young women. So perhaps he has the history errant because George Bush has absolutely nothing to do with his comment. That’s ridiculous. Thank you.”
The Red Phone will remain non-partisan – and is cautious in publishing comments regarding politics – but in looking back at the original call regarding the sex offender and the current president, it too is a little curious of the correlation. Thanks for the calls.
Working when?: “The new left turn lights at Church and First streets have been up for at least a month and are still not operable. How long does it take to turn them on and get the intersection working properly?”
You’re in luck. A Dispatch reporter has been following the progress on the signal at that intersection, recently rated second highest in number of collisions.
City traffic engineers said the switch will occur Thursday, when the existing traffic signal at the intersection will again be shut down for additional electrical work. Between 9am to 6pm Monday and Thursday, the lights will either be dark or flashing red, and should be treated as a four-way stop.
The existing signal will be out of service and the intersection will operate as a four-way stop during working hours to complete the wiring.
