Both Gilroy High and Christopher High head into Saturday’s Dig Pink Tournament on a winning note, as both schools knocked off their respective Monterey Bay League opponents Thursday night.
The Mustangs (2-3 Pacific Division) sent away visiting Alisal, which had been in second place coming into the match, 3-1. GHS dropped the first set but proceeded to take the next three (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18) to wrapped up the match.
Gilroy’s victory, along with a Cougars narrow escape out of Everett Alvarez (22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 27-25, 16-14), combined to help CHS move into that second slot.
The Cougars (4-1 Pacific Division) rallied from two sets down to sweep the next three in thrilling fashion – including coming back from a 5-0 deficit at the start of the winner-take-all fifth set.
Both schools participate in the Dig Pink Tournament at CHS. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
FIELD HOCKEY
Goals from Melanie Tanaka and Maddie Peterson lifted the Christopher High field hockey team to a 2-0 win over Santa Catalina on Thursday.
The Cougars push their Mission Trail Athletic League record to 7-0.
Head coach Lia Peterson credited goalie Kyle Robinson for her play in the cage, and also pointed to the active effort of Emma Morley and Hannah Ronsse in the midfield.
TENNIS
Christopher High defeated Pajaro Valley 6-1 on Thursday, despite having to withdraw its No.1-singles player Emily Barham from her match due to injury.
Head coach Patrick McBrearty said Barham will just need some rest and will be OK by the time the end of next week rolls around.
Shelby O’Hara (No. 2-singles), Adena Chen (No. 3-singles) and Nubia Juarez (No. 4-singles) all won in straight sets.
Doubles results followed the same suit. Tiffany Roberts and Yvonne AuYeung (No. 1-doubles), Jade Bardick and Malia Campos (No. 2-doubles), and Samantha Sarabia and Elizabeth Levan (No. 3-doubles) were all victorious.
