Jon Bettencourt fashioned a 5-over par, two-day total of 147 to claim the title of Gilroy City Amateur Champion at the inaugural event held at Eagle Ridge and Gilroy Golf courses on Saturday and Sunday.
Bettencourt was three strokes down to eventual runner-up Jeremy Thielen, but sizzled to a 1-under, 69 at Gilroy on Sunday to take the crown. Chad Brownfield finished in third with a two-day 151.
Ted Diaz went wire to wire in the Senior Division, firing a consistent 78-79-157 to win the title. Jeff Zibnack won the low net in the Senior Division with a net 146 followed by Ed Wilson Sr. with a 153.
Shawn Hennessy took the low net title in the First Flight with a net 140, followed by 15-year-old Ryan Slater at 144 and Jordan Miller at 145. Keeping it in the family, Lloyd Hennessy captured the low net title in the Second Flight with a 141. Bob Colla at 146 and Nolan Harding at 149 rounded out the top three.
The final round at Gilroy Golf Course was highlighted by a hole-in-one by Vinny DeLorenzo. DeLorenzo knocked in a pitching wedge on the 135-yard 14th hole for his first ace.
This annual event will be held again the first weekend in November 2013.
